Purchase of Parrog
Published 08-07-26
Much of the land in and around Newport is owned by the Barony of Cemaes. More information on the history of the town can be found here.
In 2024 the Council learned that the Barony wanted to sell some of the land around Parrog, including Parrog Car Park, Parrog shelter, The Lime Kiln, two sheds, Traeth Hogan, the promontory by the jetty, public toilets and land, and the Green.
A public meeting was held to consider the options for the town. The details of which can be found at the bottom of this page. In a nutshell, the meeting agreed that the Town Council was the most appropriate organisation to buy the land so that it could maintain access for all to the open space and local amenities.
As a result of the purchase, the land will be held in perpetuity for the benefit of the community, with the Town Council as the land owner.
This process has been ongoing since that public meeting, with the Council working to ensure that the purchase meets the aims of the Vision Statement agreed with local stakeholder groups, which states:
Vision Statement for Parrog
Newport Town Council’s vision for Parrog, which includes the public toilets, car park, historic lime kilns and environs, is to acquire and retain it as a community Asset, for the use and benefit of its inhabitants and the visitors to Newport and the local economy.
The Council has applied for and obtained some funding to help, details below.
The Parrog Task and Finish Group meets regularly to share progress and discuss issues that affect the purchase and management of the Parrog, including legal and funding matters. Reports of which can be found in the document library.
