Newport R.F.C. was established in the summer of 1983 when a decision was made to form a senior rugby team in the town. From the first game against the Metropolitan Police XV, the club went from strength to strength, producing numerous talented individuals who have gone on to gain county and national honours.

The rugby club moved to its current home in 1982 and where honoured when the legendary Lion and Welsh wing Gerald Davies came to open the new changing rooms.
